My friend Laurie Ann Haus made me aware of the sculptures/dolls of Anna-Mari Kaipainen, and I thought her version of Waterhouse's mermaid was so lovely I had to share it.
I think she did a phenomenal job of capturing the expression of the original.
Good try and sweet result, but the face expression has nothing to do with the original painting and the atmosphere it conveys. The time I will discover a modern painter or sculptor who can grasp these expressions, I will bow with respect. Meanwhile I am not sure if these "copies" pay homage or "desecrate" the originals.
Pegasus, I think you should consider that the original painting was probably several feet wide, while the sculpture is would be 7 inches tall if standing. So the entire face on the painting is probably larger than the entire sculpture. It would be much harder to do at that tiny size.
You're right; it's lovely. I love her expression, which to me seems to say, "joy awaits me... when I'm ready."

That's a wonderful way to think of it! :)

ReplyDeleteI like this, regardless of the original version. Lovely to look at:-)
ReplyDeleteHmm...I thought it was a pretty uncanny likeness! But I love that art is all a matter of opinion :D
