Want a Waterhouse original?
....and one of his most famous artworks? Got a spare $800,000?
If I won the lottery in the next week (which is unlikely, since I don't even play), I would SO fly to New York and run away with this painting.
J.W. Waterhouse's Miranda - the Tempest is going up for auction at Sotheby's in New York on April 24th. For anyone close to New York, the artwork will be available to view in person prior to the auction:
Sat, 18 Apr 09, 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Sun, 19 Apr 09, 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Mon, 20 Apr 09, 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Tue, 21 Apr 09, 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Wed, 22 Apr 09, 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Thu, 23 Apr 09, 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM
If you don't live near New York, the above link will still take you to an image of the artwork. You can zoom in and see a great amount of detail on this masterpiece of Waterhouse's career.
Many thanks to Art Magick's webmistress for posting this on johnwilliamwaterhouse.com's forums.
Surely it will sell for more than that? That seems almost criminal:)
ReplyDeleteI DO play the lottery often.
I think it will go for more than that too - recession or no. Wonderful work.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely painting! I will forever have to rely on tapestries or prints that depict these images! How are you dear Grace? Have a great day! Anita
ReplyDeleteIt's one of my favourite paintings, but I don't know how well it will do at auction. Last fall I saw a number of Burne-Jones and Rossetti works that didn't even meet the reserve. We'll see! I hope it does well, but I'll be even happier if a collector buys it and then donates it to a museum for the tax credit. Everyone wins!
ReplyDeleteI do HOPE it goes for more than this price. And honestly of all the Pre-Raphaelites (although Waterhouse wasn't technically one), I think his is among the most likely to still sell well. His work is just so very romantic and narrative.
ReplyDeleteWe'll see!!!
Margaret, I agree that donating it to a museum would be grand, but if I could afford it, I doubt I could bear to part with it :D
I've been tossing it around for a while now whether or not to put this one over my bed. I love it, so why not? A print, of course :). LBx
ReplyDeletegulp!
ReplyDeleteI love Waterhouse.
But we are talking about just less than a million US here ladies. That's an awful lot of money.
I was looking for some past sale prices but Artnet etc. keep them carefully concealed unless you pay up. But there is another painting of his up for sale on the 22nd April:

Its not very big and much more potentially affordable.

ReplyDeleteDamn it cuts off the url each time.
ReplyDelete... /thread/12581/
sorry about that.
That one is lovely too, but I tend to really strongly gravitate towards his later work.
ReplyDeleteAh if only this was some parallel universe where I could afford his art :D

ReplyDeletehey grace i have a question about the pre-r and the arts and crafts movement, but i don't want to post it here, could i be able to email you?
ReplyDeleteHi Angelica! Sure...feel free! Gmail addy is feysidhe@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI'm pondering websites to suggest to you. I'm sure you've probably already been over to victorianweb.org ? And the William Morris Society's website?
I should just give you the gorgeous "Miranda" gown Lisa made for me. It would look so much prettier on you and you have so many more places to wear it not to mention all your photo shoots and other professional events. I am sure you could make the red under sleeves and find the right shoes. Plus, you have the long red hair for it which I am sadly missing and you have the delicate features of Miranda-I just have big man hands and a potato for a nose. This painting should go for much more.
ReplyDeleteHeya Merle!
ReplyDeleteThat gorgeous gown was made for you...I'd never take it! It screams "you" :D
Plus I'm hoping soon to make my own take on Waterhouse's signature dress :)
Great! Great!! Great!!!
