Thanks again to a post on Art Magick for this info. There is a new 50-minute Waterhouse documentary online! It's sublime to watch for anyone who enjoys the work of this brilliant artist. I was elated the whole time I was watching.

Rossetti's Wombat

Thanks to a post on the ArtMagick forums for this tip. There's a new book out on the subject of Rossetti's pet wombat. I love the idea of a book that approaches the Brotherhood from such a quirky angle! Hopefully I can obtain this book somehow.

Bert Barelds' Waterhouse Photography

A huge thank you to Bert who informed me of the artist who did the photography in the Waterhouse exhibition video a few entries down. Apparently he has an exhibition in Groningen. There's also a website showing several of his Waterhouse art photographs, but sadly I have a hard time navigating it entirely, since it's in another language.

I so wish I lived close enough to see more of his photographs (and selfishly, wish I could have participated in his project!!)

A Beauty or a Beast of a New Year?

Happy New Year, TBN readers! Today I thought I'd share with you a book I've recently read and adored. It's a picture book of Beauty and the Beast illustrated by Angela Barrett. Several reviews of her work use the words "Pre-Raphaelite inspired", and I loved how very moody and beautiful every artwork was in the book, but I felt this image especially reminded me of the PRB:

The image of Beauty's two sisters warming their feet by the fire looks very much inspired by Rossetti's sketches of his dear wife, Lizzie Siddal. Yes?

Sleeping Beauty Holidays

It's always hard to focus on anything but family and the warm glow of the holidays around this time of the year, but I've finally gotten around to reading a book whose cover I've admired for years. The book is Orson Scott Card's Enchantment, and the cover, I feel, is a good example of Pre-Raphaelite-inspired art done right.

Sadly, I couldn't find an extremely large version of this image on the 'net, but the girl at the bottom of the picture is clearly inspired, with her flowing gown, by Millais' Ophelia. But the face and garment look more like a Waterhouse image of St Cecilia. The image of her sleeping in a meadow of autumn leaves is so dream-like, and the image of the floating damsel takes on a whole new meaning when surrounded by a different context.

The artist of this piece is Greg Spalenka, who apparently has done other covers I have admired.

And for the record, the book is excellent, and I'm almost finished with it.
